Was nice to change subjects after a long stretch of Santa’s. Went back to a favorite source of inspiration James Miller’s Whittling Flat-Plane Animals. I have had this guy on my to-do list since I got that book. I maintained the “single knife” approach with this project (as with all my flat-plane animals to date) using only my Harley Knife. One significant thing you may notice is that the carving is already painted! Something I unexpectedly learned during my extended run of Santa carvings (believe I ended at 8, maybe 9) is I have come to enjoy the painting process a lot more! I still truly enjoy the natural wood look, but, will say there are definitely pieces that really lend themselves to a bit of paint. A Raven that is not black?? Just seemed wrong!
